French polishing is a labour intensive process which entails applying shellac and alcohol to a wooden surface bringing out the most vibrant colours and depth of shine.
Here at Lomas and Pigeon, you can call on our team of highly skilled and experienced craftsmen to provide the best advice and results for your furniture.
Everyday wear and tear can affect all wooden furniture. This includes the sun, scratches, dents, heat and water damage. In many cases the original finish can be restored retaining the colour and patina, in others it is necessary re-finish.
French polishing is one way of restoring the finish back to its former glory. If carried out correctly this painstaking technique can really bring antiques and fine furniture back to life. However it is very important not to ‘over restore’ an item thus spoiling the patina and indeed the value.
French polishing gives a highly regarded finish, but is not suitable for all types of furniture. We will always advise on the best and correct way of treating your antiques. We can also offer the following range of alternative finishing and polishing techniques:
- Bleaching – necessary for some surfaces marked by stains, rings and water spots
- Colour matching – using dyes to address discolouration
- Wax Polishing
- Wood Staining – to change the colour
- Other traditional wood finishing techniques
- Modern wood finishing techniques
Contact us today for advice on whether French polishing is right for you, or if it is possible to retain and conserve the existing finish.
